Which is better to use, carbon steel platform scale or stainless steel platform scale?

2026-02-27

In the field of industrial weighing, such as floor scales, truck scales, and platform scales, stainless steel scale frames and carbon steel scale frames are the two most essential structural material choices. They are not simply 'who is better', but two solutions tailored to different usage environments and cost budgets.

Core comparison: Stainless steelcarbon steel scale
Comparison dimension:Stainless steel scale frame (304)Carbon steel scale frame
Core advantages: Ultimate corrosion resistance, hygienic and easy to clean, maintenance free, and aesthetically pleasing appearanceExtremely high structural strength, extremely low cost, and good processing and welding performance
Fatal disadvantages:

The price is expensive (about 1-3 times that of carbon steel), and the stiffness/strength is relatively low

Extremely prone to rusting, requiring regular anti-corrosion maintenance, and high maintenance costs

Highly corrosion-resistant. 304 can resist atmospheric and water vapor;

After the surface paint film is damaged, the substrate will quickly rust, affecting the structural life.

The structural strength is moderate, and the maintenance cost is almost zero. No need to paint or touch up, just rinse with water.

3-5 years need to be sandblasted again for rust removal and anti-corrosion, otherwise the scale body is prone to scrap.
Applicable scenarios include food factories, pharmaceutical factories (GMP), chemical plants, coastal ports, sewage treatment plants, laboratories, general factories, warehouses, logistics parks, dry inland areas, situations with limited budgets or no hygiene requirements

1. Stainless steel scale frame: Paying for "harsh environments"

- Why is it expensive?

In addition to the fact that the material itself is an alloy (with high nickel and chromium content), its processing difficulty is also high. Stainless steel has poor thermal conductivity, is prone to deformation during welding, and requires extremely high welding skills, all of which are included in the total price.

- Applicability:

If your scale needs to come into direct contact with food, stainless steel must be selected. Otherwise, carbon steel scales may not last for a year when immersed in chemical gases or saltwater.

2. Carbon steel scale frame: the king of cost-effectiveness, but requires "frequent maintenance"

Surface treatment is key:
carbon steel itself will rust, and buying a carbon steel scale is actually buying its "coating system".

- Economic account:

A 1 * 1m platform scale, carbon steel may be sold for $200~250, and stainless steel may be sold for $350~450. The $100-200 saved is enough for you to do multiple high standard anti-corrosion maintenance in the coming years. For ordinary machining workshops and drying warehouses, carbon steel is a wise choice.

Adequate budget or use for food and pharmaceutical production of stainless steel once and for all, to avoid measurement errors and hygiene fines caused by rust.

The environment is humid (such as aquatic products, cold storage) or contains chemicals. Stainless steel (316L is recommended) and carbon steel paint film are prone to cracking under alternating cold and hot conditions, and chemicals can corrode the paint film.

Due to limited budget, it is more cost-effective to use the saved money for purchasing higher precision sensors or instruments for ordinary weighing and environmental dry carbon stee.

The ultra large range (such as a 100 ton weighing scale) carbon steel and large tonnage stainless steel scales have a large weight and vary greatly in price, making carbon steel more reliable in strength.

Special Reminder (Avoiding Pits Guide)

1. Beware of "stainless steel": There are commercial households on the market using 201 stainless steel to impersonate 304.

2. The "soft rib" of carbon steel is at the bottom: The biggest fear of carbon steel scales is not stepping on them, but scratching the paint film when dragging and transporting them on the ground. Once scratched, water vapor will invade and rust through from the inside, but it cannot be seen from the outside. During installation, it is necessary to elevate and leave drainage space.

3. The welding point determines the service life: regardless of the material, the quality of the weld determines the fatigue life of the weighing frame. Check whether the weld joint is full and uniform, and whether there are slag inclusions or pores.
